AI Chip Boom Adds $2 Trillion in Value as Sector Enters Volatile Q3

Chipmakers added $2 trillion in value during a record-breaking second quarter, though the sector faces a volatile start to July as investors weigh AI sustainability.

The global semiconductor industry witnessed an unprecedented surge in market capitalization during the second quarter of 2026, adding a staggering $2 trillion in value across major players. Micron Technology led the pack with a massive 240% jump, followed by Intel and Advanced Micro Devices, which saw gains of 216% and 186% respectively. The rally underscores the massive capital deployment toward artificial intelligence infrastructure.

However, the third quarter has opened with a "volatile stretch" for chip stocks, as investors debate the sustainability of these valuations. While SK Hynix continues to seek a $29 billion U.S. listing to capitalize on the AI boom, some analysts are warning of a cooling period. Fund managers are increasingly advising investors to "AI-proof" their portfolios by diversifying into active ETFs and low-volatility sectors to mitigate the risk of a potential reversal in highly concentrated tech indices.
