Beyond the 60/40: How Wealthy Investors are Rewriting Retirement Rules

Wealthy investors are abandoning the 60/40 rule in favor of private assets and stock-heavy portfolios to mitigate inflation.

High-net-worth individuals are increasingly moving away from the traditional 60/40 portfolio, which splits assets between stocks and bonds, arguing it no longer provides adequate protection. In an era where both markets can decline simultaneously, wealthy investors are turning to more sophisticated 'out-of-the-box' moves. This includes heavy investments in income-generating private assets and implementing aggressive tax-reduction strategies to preserve capital.

Retirees with substantial portfolios are also surprisingly loading up on stocks rather than dialing back risk as they age, a move designed to combat the long-term effects of inflation. Furthermore, the use of deferred income strategies—similar to the famous Bobby Bonilla contract—allows wealthy individuals to spread tax liabilities over decades. By focusing on asset location and high-yield vehicles, these investors aim to build a more resilient financial structure that typical retail models may overlook.
