Beyond the Nest Egg: Building a Resilient Income Strategy for Retirement

Retirement planning is shifting away from total savings goals toward building sustainable, tax-efficient income streams that align with lifestyle needs.
For many pre-retirees, the standard advice of hitting a specific 'number' in their brokerage account may be missing the forest for the trees. Financial planners are increasingly shifting the focus from total savings to sustainable income strategies. The key is determining how much cash flow is needed to support a specific lifestyle, accounting for inflation and changing medical needs, rather than fixating on a static retirement goal.
A significant part of this calculation involves understanding the role of pensions and Social Security. For those fortunate enough to have a pension, the traditional $1 million nest egg target may be unnecessary. If an individual is already receiving $100,000 in annual pension and Social Security income, their investment portfolio needs to do much less heavy lifting. In these cases, the focus shifts to tax efficiency and inflation protection rather than aggressive growth.
Furthermore, the transition to retirement requires a psychological shift in asset management. Instead of accumulating, retirees must learn to 'sell' strategically. Recommended strategies include liquidating investments in taxable brokerage accounts first to allow tax-advantaged accounts to grow, and trimming concentrated stock positions that have historically performed well but now represent a risk to the total portfolio. Optimization of 'asset location'—placing tax-heavy investments into IRAs while keeping tax-efficient assets in brokerage accounts—can significantly extend the life of a portfolio.
