China Escalates Trade Tensions With Export Controls on U.S. Rare Earth Firms

Beijing has intensified its trade war with Washington by imposing fresh export controls on several U.S. entities, specifically targeting the rare earth sector. The Chinese government added MP Materials and USA Rare Earth, along with eight other companies, to its restricted list, citing links to the U.S. military. The Chinese Ministry of Commerce described the move as a necessary response to 'malicious practices' by the U.S. government and framed the controls as essential for safeguarding national security and fulfilling international obligations.

The targeting of MP Materials is particularly significant, as the company operates the only active rare earth mine and processing site in the United States. Rare earth elements are critical for high-tech manufacturing, including electric vehicle motors, wind turbines, and advanced military hardware. By restricting these firms, China is leveraging its dominant position in the global rare earth supply chain to exert pressure on American industrial and defense capabilities, further straining the complex economic relationship between the two superpowers.
