Chip Sector Enters 'Historic' Expansion Phase as AMD and Infineon Raise Outlooks

Infineon and AMD lift guidance as AI demand surges, while Arm Holdings struggles with supply constraints amid a global race to build data centers.

The semiconductor industry is currently experiencing a period of unprecedented expansion, characterized by a wave of upbeat earnings and upgraded financial forecasts. Infineon Technologies recently lifted its AI-related revenue targets for fiscal 2026 and 2027, signaling confidence that the current boom is entering a more sustainable, long-term phase. This sentiment is echoed by AMD, which saw profits and revenue jump on the back of accelerating data center demand, with CEO Lisa Su projecting second-quarter revenue to reach $11.2 billion.

Despite the soaring demand, supply chain constraints remain a significant hurdle. Arm Holdings reported that it currently lacks enough supply to meet the 'roaring' demand for its new chip designs. Although the company saw royalty revenue from AI data centers more than double year-over-year, the gap between demand and manufacturing capacity continues to be a bottleneck for the broader ecosystem. This mismatch has sparked a global effort among governments and corporations to remake and diversify semiconductor supply chains.

The rally has also sparked a recovery for stocks previously out of favor. Super Micro Computer, which some traders considered 'left for dead' after a period of cooling, has seen a resurgence in investor interest. Options traders are now betting heavily on a comeback for the firm, which manufactures the server racks essential for AI data centers. Overall, the sector's performance in April has eased previous investor concerns about a slowdown in AI infrastructure buildouts.
