Chip Stocks Rebound as Samsung Warns of Extended AI Memory Crunch

Semiconductors rebounded sharply as strong results from Lam Research and Samsung's warning of a multi-year chip crunch offset a trillion-dollar rout.

Global chip stocks staged a dramatic recovery on Thursday as a wave of robust earnings from Microsoft and Lam Research countered recent anxieties over a $1 trillion sector-wide selloff. Lam Research led the charge, with shares surging 18% in their best daily performance since 1999, driven by high demand for automated-wafer fab equipment. The broader iShares Semiconductor ETF popped 8%, while industry heavyweights Applied Materials and Advanced Micro Devices rallied 15% and 13%, respectively.

The rebound follows a period of intense volatility where the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index (SOX) shed nearly 20% of its value in a month. Investor sentiment had soured due to 'underwhelming' results from SK Hynix, despite the South Korean giant posting a 557% jump in operating profit. While the figures were record-breaking, they failed to satisfy the market's high-octane expectations for AI growth. Nvidia, which recently lost its crown as the world's most valuable company to Apple, also saw a modest recovery after a $238 billion rout.

Memory chip manufacturers provided further momentum for the rally. Samsung Electronics forecast a 19-fold jump in second-quarter profit and warned that the global memory crunch could persist until 2028. This outlook sent Micron and Sandisk soaring 18% and 26%, respectively. Companies are increasingly funneling capital into advanced DRAM and HBM4 technology to meet the insatiable infrastructure needs of AI data centers.

Despite the share price recovery, structural concerns remain. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang noted that AI is fundamentally reshaping the global supply chain, forcing a move toward more open models and deeper partnerships with groups like SK Hynix. Investors are also beginning to look past pure silicon, with Bloomberg analysts suggesting that AI benchmarks must now factor in energy supply, as the boom shifts from a software story to a utility and infrastructure story.
