Chip Stocks Slump Globally as AI Jitters and Trade Tensions Mount

Semiconductor stocks slide globally as investors weigh the impact of new trade bans and question the long-term profitability of the AI boom.

Global chip stocks experienced a sharp sell-off this week as a combination of geopolitical tensions and "AI jitters" rattled investor confidence. In Asia, South Korea’s benchmark Kospi index triggered a temporary trading halt after plunging 8%, led by a decline in semiconductor heavyweights. The volatility reflects growing concerns that the massive capital expenditure on artificial intelligence may not yield near-term profits, compounded by new U.S. trade restrictions on Chinese technology.

The market turmoil was not Limited to Asia. In the U.S., major tech indices saw significant pullbacks as traders weighed the impact of the Trump administration's latest robot ban and tariff announcements. Analysts suggested that the "AI trade," which has driven markets to record highs over the last year, is facing a reality check. Investors are increasingly scrutinizing the valuations of companies at the forefront of the robotics and chip industries.

In the commodities space, oil prices have exhibited extreme volatility. While prices initially surged due to Houthi attacks on tankers in the Red Sea, they saw a sharp mid-week dive following rumors of temporary pauses in strikes to allow for diplomatic talks. However, the lack of a permanent resolution to the Iran war continues to provide a high floor for crude prices.

Corporate earnings also provided a mixed picture. While Chinese chip firms saw record-breaking IPOs on domestic exchanges, international consumer-facing companies like Shein are reporting losses due into the changing tariff environment. The divergence between domestic Chinese market performance and global tech sentiment highlights the increasing fragmentation of the global financial system.
