Crypto and Sports Betting Giants Flood 2026 Midterms With $270 Million

The cryptocurrency and sports betting industries have poured a combined $270 million into the 2026 midterm elections to influence federal oversight and legislative frameworks.

As the 2026 midterm elections approach, the digital asset industry has emerged as a formidable political donor, funneling nearly $200 million into various congressional races. This massive capital injection follows a $170 million spending spree in the 2024 cycle, highlighting the sector's aggressive push to secure a legislative environment favorable to cryptocurrencies. Leading the charge is the Fairshake super PAC, which has raised over $136 million to support candidates who favor digital asset innovation and clear federal oversight.

Key beneficiaries of this industry backing include Representative Barry Moore (R-AL) and Representative Andy Barr (R-KY), both of whom have supported measures like the Genius Act and the Clarity Act. The spending is not limited to one side of the aisle; Democrats like Christian Menefee in Texas and Maryland State Delegate Adrian Boafo have also seen significant support. The industry's goal is to ensure that temporary executive orders regarding crypto assets are eventually enshrined into permanent federal law to provide long-term market certainty.

Simultaneously, the sports betting industry is making its own mark on the midterm landscape, with spending surpassing $72 million. Both sectors are leveraging their financial might to influence the composition of the next Congress, aiming to install lawmakers who will prioritize the regulatory frameworks of these emerging digital and gaming economies. Critics, however, have raised concerns about the scale of this spending, with some incumbents accusing the industries of attempting to 'control Congress' through unprecedented financial influence.
