Brands Bet on Microinfluencers, Shifting Marketing Dollars

Brands Bet on Microinfluencers, Shifting Marketing Dollars

Major brands are allocating more marketing budgets to 'microinfluencers' with smaller followings due to higher engagement rates. Meanwhile, Ford expands its vehicle customization options to capture more aftermarket revenue.

Brands are increasingly investing in smaller-scale online creators, while automakers look to in-house customization to boost revenue and workplace studies highlight the value of uninterrupted focus time.

Brands Increase Spending on Small-Scale Influencers

Major brands are shifting their marketing budgets toward influencers with smaller followings. Research firm Emarketer forecasts that US-based influencers will earn $21 billion this year, with a significant portion of that spending directed at smaller creators.

Approximately 45% of brand spending on influencer marketing is projected to go to creators with fewer than 20,000 followers, a sharp increase from 19.5% in 2021. Companies such as Target, American Eagle, and Soul Cycle are now partnering with creators who have follower counts as low as 500.

This strategic shift is driven by data showing higher engagement rates from smaller accounts. Growth marketing firm ATTN found that microinfluencers have an average engagement rate of 3.2%, compared to 1.1% for those with over one million followers. While larger accounts can generate more revenue, they can cost up to 18 times more to partner with.

However, compensation for these smaller creators is often modest, consisting of product discounts, gift cards, or free items. According to a survey by Influencer Marketing Hub, more than half of full-time creators reported earning below a living wage, indicating that this path may not be a stable source of income.

Colonel Sanders's Former Estate Goes to Auction

The former residence of Kentucky Fried Chicken founder Colonel Harland Sanders is scheduled to be sold at auction. The three-acre property in Kentucky includes the Blackwood Hall mansion and the Claudia Sanders Dinner House, a restaurant the couple opened after selling the KFC company in 1964.

The estate, which also served as the original KFC headquarters, was previously listed for $9 million in 2022 before its price was reduced to $4.9 million in 2023. Along with the property, some of Sanders's personal memorabilia will be part of the auction.

Auctioneers claim that one of the items for sale, the Colonel's day planner, contains the precise measurements for his famous recipe of 11 herbs and spices. However, a spokesperson for Yum! Brands, KFC's parent company, disputed this, stating the authentic recipe is secured in a digital safe encased in concrete.

    Ford Expands In-House Vehicle Customization

Ford is expanding its customization offerings, providing customers with more options for performance parts and accessories. The automaker aims to generate excitement with special-edition vehicles, drawing a parallel to limited-edition athletic shoe releases to create consumer hype.

As an example, Ford recently unveiled a pink version of its Bronco SUV with features inspired by the landscape near Salt Lake City, available for an additional $13,695. The initiative is designed to let Ford capture a larger share of the $53 billion aftermarket¹ auto enhancements industry and increase revenue for its dealerships.

Ford states that half of its customers already request some form of customization. By offering these modifications directly, the company can include a three-year warranty on all specialty parts and finance them through its auto loan department. Some industry observers suggest this push may also serve to add novelty to existing vehicle lines in the absence of new models.

Study Finds Quiet Time Boosts Team Performance

A recent survey of 6,000 workers by consulting group Superteams Inc. found a strong correlation between uninterrupted solo work time and high team performance. The most successful teams, identified as "superteams," all reported having access to quiet spaces for focused work.

When comparing amenities, members of these high-performing teams were 52% more likely than average teams to have access to quiet workspaces. This was found to be a more significant factor than other perks like collaborative areas or free coffee.

The findings suggest that the ability for employees to find quiet, focused time may be a more critical driver of productivity than the location of the work itself, reframing the debate around remote versus in-office policies.

    Bottom line for investors

Companies are re-evaluating long-held strategies in marketing, product offerings, and workplace design in search of better engagement and productivity.
