Federal Reserve Holds Rates Steady Amidst Uncertainty

The Federal Reserve kept its benchmark interest rate unchanged, creating market uncertainty. In corporate news, Meta's AI spending impacts cash flow, while DoorDash receives approval for its own drone delivery service.
The Federal Reserve maintained current interest rates but offered little guidance on future moves. Meanwhile, major technology firms reported mixed results driven by heavy investments in artificial intelligence.
Federal Reserve Keeps Interest Rates Unchanged
The Federal Reserve announced it will maintain its benchmark interest rate¹ in the current range of 3.5% to 3.75%. In a statement, the central bank provided minimal guidance on future policy, saying only that it aims to "deliver price stability."
The decision was not unanimous, with three of twelve regional Fed presidents voting in favor of a rate hike. This division, combined with persistent inflation pressures, has led many investors to anticipate a rate increase at the next meeting in September. The Fed's statement noted that inflation remains above its 2% target, attributing this to supply disruptions.
The Fed Chair, Kevin Warsh, has adopted a communication strategy that deviates from his predecessors by offering fewer direct signals about future policy. This approach is intended to compel bond traders to conduct their own economic analysis, which can then inform the central bank's decisions. However, this has also led to increased volatility and less consensus among investors regarding the future path of interest rates.
AI Spending Dominates Tech Earnings Reports
Meta Platforms reported that its free cash flow² decreased by 91% in the second quarter compared to the previous year. The decline is attributed to an 83% increase in capital expenditures³, which reached $31.08 billion, primarily for artificial intelligence systems such as servers and data centers. The company noted that these investments have helped grow ad revenue by 27%, though its stock fell nearly 10% in after-hours trading.
In contrast, Microsoft announced that its Azure cloud computing platform surpassed $100 billion in revenue for the 2026 fiscal year, a 41% increase. While Azure remains smaller than Amazon Web Services, it is larger than Google Cloud. Microsoft also held its capital expenditures plan steady, a move that was received positively by investors, leading to a stock increase of nearly 9% in after-hours trading.
DoorDash Advances Drone Delivery Program
The food delivery company DoorDash has received certification from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to operate a commercial drone delivery service using its own proprietary technology. The service is expected to launch in the fall.
DoorDash plans to build out a complete system for its drone operations, including ground infrastructure and handoff systems. The company stated that the goal of the program is to reduce delivery costs and speed up service, particularly for trips between three and five miles, which can take significantly longer to fulfill with human couriers.
Administration Unveils Dulles Airport Plan
President Trump announced a $22.5 billion plan to renovate Washington Dulles International Airport. The proposal involves modernizing the airport's interior and infrastructure while preserving its original exterior design.
Funding for the project has not been appropriated by Congress. The administration indicated that airlines and the issuance of bonds would cover a portion of the costs. United Airlines, which accounts for about 70% of traffic at Dulles, is expected to contribute. Some analysts have raised concerns that the high cost could make it difficult for the airline to offer low-cost fares from the airport.
Proposed improvements include streamlining existing concourses and extending the airport's underground rail system to eliminate the need for the mobile lounges, or "people movers," that have been in use since 1962. The president suggested the project could be completed in two years, a significantly shorter timeline than the 60 years originally estimated by airlines.
Bottom line for investors
The central bank's ambiguous stance on monetary policy contrasts with decisive, large-scale investments by major corporations in future technologies like AI and automated logistics.
