Dell Shares Rocket 35% on Blockbuster AI Server Growth and Raised Outlook

Dell stock surged over 30% to record highs after AI server revenue jumped 757%, leading the company to raise its annual guidance.

Dell Technologies shares skyrocketed as much as 35% on Friday, marking the company’s best single-day performance since returning to public markets in 2018. The surge followed a blockbuster earnings report that underscores the insatiable corporate demand for artificial intelligence infrastructure. Dell reported that revenue for its AI-optimized servers exploded to $16.1 billion in the most recent quarter, a staggering increase from approximately $1.9 billion in the same period last year.

The Texas-based hardware giant saw its AI server backlog continue to grow, with revenue from the segment increasing 757% year-over-year. Chief Operating Officer Jeff Clarke noted that the company is seeing momentum across its entire portfolio, though AI remains the primary catalyst. Following the results, Dell raised its full-year revenue outlook, signalizing that the infrastructure build-out for generative AI shows no signs of slowing down.

Market analysts and commentators, including CNBC’s Jim Cramer, suggested that Dell’s performance sets a positive tone for the entire enterprise hardware sector. While traditional PC and server sales have been sluggish in recent years, the necessity for high-powered computing to run large language models has provided Dell with its fastest pace of revenue growth in years. The company's ability to secure high-end Nvidia GPUs has been a critical differentiator in meeting this demand.

However, some analysts caution that the 'AI fervor' must eventually translate into broad-based productivity gains across the enterprise. While Dell is reaping the rewards of the hardware build-out phase, the company is also navigating a shifting landscape where traditional server demand is being cannibalized by AI-specific investments. For now, investors are shrugging off those concerns, focusing instead on Dell's unique position as a leading provider of the physical backbone for the AI revolution.
