Democrats Urged to Pivot Toward Down-Ballot Races to Secure Enduring Power

Democratic strategist Ben Wikler is sounding the alarm for the party, arguing that a fixation on Washington D.C. could cost Democrats the ability to maintain enduring power. Wikler, who previously served as the chair of the Democratic Party of Wisconsin, emphasizes that state-level elections in 'purple' states will be the true battleground for the next decade. He points to Wisconsin as a prime example, a state capable of electing both progressive icons and conservative hardliners.

Wikler argues that while presidential cycles garner the most media attention, the infrastructure for voting rights, reproductive healthcare, and economic policy is largely determined by state legislatures and governors. He urges national donors to shift their focus toward down-ballot races, warning that without a deep bench of local talent, the party risks losing touch with the 'two personalities' of the American electorate found in the Rust Belt.

The strategy is particularly urgent given the electoral map. Democrats view the Maine Senate seat, currently held by Susan Collins, as a 'must-win' to retake control of the upper chamber. With Collins being the only Republican representing a state carried by Kamala Harris in 2024, the race has already attracted massive fundraising hauls. Presumptive Democratic nominee Troy Jackson has raised over $600,000 in a single week following the selection of delegates for the special primary.

Simultaneously, the special election in South Carolina to fill the seat of the late Senator Lindsey Graham has become a national focus. Darline Graham, who was appointed to serve out the duration of her brother's term, has officially launched her campaign for a full six-year term. The 'pro-Israel' movement has already signaled its confidence in Graham, viewing her as a reliable vote on foreign policy in the same vein as her predecessor. The race is expected to be one of the most expensive and closely watched in the upcoming cycle.
