Dow Notches Record High as Tech Giants Propel Wall Street Rally

The Dow hit a new record as manufacturing data and tech earnings fueled a broad rally, with Amazon surpassing a $3 trillion valuation.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average reached a historic milestone on Monday, closing at a record high as investors cheered robust manufacturing data and signs of easing geopolitical tensions. All three major U.S. indices surged by more than 1%, with the communication services and consumer discretionary sectors leading the advance. Positive sentiment was further bolstered by manufacturing activity hitting a four-year high, despite persistent elevated input prices.

Market heavyweights Amazon and Microsoft spearheaded the rally. Amazon's market capitalization surpassed the $3 trillion mark following a 14% surge, driven by stellar cloud revenue performance and increased spending forecasts. Microsoft also saw significant gains, adding a record $450 billion in value in a single day. Other tech giants including Alphabet and Oracle followed suit, while Boeing rose 8% after receiving FAA certification for the 737 MAX 7.

The rally comes despite recent volatility in AI-related trades. Analysts note that while some investors have expressed concern over the high-water mark of artificial intelligence investment, the broader market remains resilient through sector rotation. The S&P 500 has gained roughly 50% over the last two years, buoyed by accelerating profit growth which hit an estimated 50% for the most recent quarter.

However, the bond market remains a source of caution. U.S. Treasury yields fluctuated as investors parsed remarks from Federal Reserve officials for clues on future interest rate paths. While nominal GDP growth remains strong at an annualized 8%, the risk of overheating persists, potentially requiring the Fed to bolster its inflation-fighting credibility with further rate adjustments later this year.
