Energy Markets Volatile as Iran Conflict and Houthi Attacks Threaten Global Oil Routes

Oil prices fluctuated wildly as Iran-led attacks on tankers and U.S. forces were offset by hope for a diplomatic opening.

Global oil prices experienced significant volatility this week as the U.S.-Iran conflict directly impacted supply routes and market sentiment. U.S. oil futures surged immediately following reports of an IRGC ballistic missile attack on U.S. forces, but later retreated when both nations appeared to pause strikes for a brief diplomatic window. The "tit-for-tat" nature of the conflict continues to leave traders uncertain about the long-term stability of the Strait of Hormuz.

The Houthi movement in Yemen has added to the pressure on commodities by claiming a missile attack on a Saudi Arabian oil tanker in the Red Sea. The group, allied with Iran, has threatened to continue targeting vessels in vital shipping routes if the U.S.-led blockade on Iranian ports is not lifted. This has led to higher insurance premiums for shipping companies and prompted the U.S. military to redirect nearly 20 commercial vessels in recent days.

In North America, the commodities sector is also dealing with the impact of environmental factors. Wildfires in Canada and the western U.S. have disrupted timber operations and threatened energy infrastructure, adding further complexity to an already strained supply chain. Market analysts are closely watching the intersection of geopolitical conflict and natural disasters as they forecast price movements for the second half of the year.

The energy sector is seeing new alliances form despite the regional chaos. Turkiye and Iraq have taken a "historic step" by signing a new energy alliance aimed at stabilizing domestic supplies and creating a more robust regional network. This deal comes as Iraq faces constant pressure from Iran-backed militias who have targeted Saudi-linked energy facilities in the Eastern province.
