FIFA President Infantino Faces European Backlash as Support Erases

FIFA President Gianni Infantino is facing the most severe crisis of his tenure as several major European soccer federations have formally withdrawn their support for his re-election. The national associations of Serbia, Sweden, and Wales announced their move on Monday, following a similar stance by England.

The backlash was ignited by the collapse of a controversial plan to sell a stake in the FIFA World Cup to private investors. The proposal, which sought to bring in billions in private equity capital, was met with fierce resistance from member nations who feared it would strip them of control over the sport’s most lucrative asset. Former FIFA Vice President Jim Boyce emphasized that the organization must now work to "rebuild trust" after the failed sell-off.

Adding to the controversy, reports from the New York Post suggest that Infantino personally sought the backing of President Donald Trump after the investor proposal failed. The optics of seeking political intervention in a sports governance matter have further alienated UEFA members.

Infantino still intends to seek a new term from 2027 to 2031, but the loss of support from major European powers could open the door for a challenger. Names of potential successors are already being discussed in Brussels and Zurich as the embattled president struggles to maintain his grip on global soccer’s governing body.
