Global Markets Rattled by AI Capex Fears and Surge in Oil Prices

Global markets face a 'perfect storm' as AI jitters, $100 oil, and rising bond yields threaten to derail the year's equity gains.

Global equity markets are navigating a treacherous "perfect storm" as a confluence of rising Treasury yields, triple-digit oil prices, and escalating trade tensions rattle investor confidence. The tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 has faced significant pressure as the initial euphoria surrounding artificial intelligence meets the cold reality of massive capital expenditure. Alphabet's recent earnings served as a microcosm for this trend: despite beating cloud revenue expectations, the stock slid as investors fixated on AI-linked investments now projected to top $200 billion annually.

The volatility is particularly acute in Asian markets, where South Korean and Japanese indices have led recent selloffs. The Kospi, in particular, remains one of the world’s most volatile benchmarks, largely because its performance is inextricably linked to semiconductor titans Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix. Analysts remain skeptical that government efforts to tame these market swings will succeed as long as the index is so heavily dominated by the cyclical fortunes of the AI hardware build-out.

On Wall Street, the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average have shown more resilience compared to tech, yet the 10-year Treasury yield hovering near 4.68% continues to weigh on valuations. Investors are also closely monitoring a fresh wave of U.S. tariffs, which have added another layer of complexity to global trade. With crude oil prices testing the $100 threshold and inflation remaining a sticky concern, the narrative of "higher for longer" interest rates is being replaced by renewed discussions of stagflation.

Market participants are now bracing for a crucial two-week window that many believe will define the trajectory for the remainder of the year. While corporate earnings have generally remained strong, the disconnect between robust profits and wobbling stock prices suggests that at these valuations, there is zero margin for error. As one analyst noted, the "magnificent" cash burn required to stay competitive in the AI race is finally forcing a revaluation of the risk-to-reward ratio in the equity markets.
