Haiti Schedules Long-Delayed Elections for December Amid Security Fears

Haiti has set a December date for its first elections in ten years, though security concerns from gang violence still loom over the process.

Haiti's Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) has officially scheduled the nation's first presidential and legislative elections in a decade, setting the first round for December 13, 2026. A subsequent runoff is planned for February 21, 2027. The announcement follows years of delays fueled by extreme gang violence and political instability that have left the country without a democratically elected leader since 2016.

The council emphasized that the timeline remains contingent on establishing an 'acceptable security climate' and securing the necessary funding for operations. While the CEP has begun registering voters and approved over 300 political parties to compete, analysts remain skeptical. Ongoing gang control of major portions of Port-au-Prince continues to pose a significant threat to the feasibility of a free and fair vote.

Successive transitional governments have struggled to reclaim territory from armed groups, which has been a prerequisite for holding the vote. The international community, which has been pushing for a return to constitutional order, greeted the news with cautious optimism, though the threat of further postponement remains high if the security situation does not improve by the fourth quarter.
