Legacy Building: High-Net-Worth Strategies for Multi-Generational Wealth

Wealthy retirees are pivoting toward multi-generational investment strategies and private equity to preserve legacies.

For high-net-worth individuals, estate planning is becoming increasingly complex as tax laws evolve. The focus has shifted from simple inheritance to "legacy building," which requires navigating intricate tax landscapes to ensure the maximum amount of wealth passes to the next generation. Experts suggest three primary strategies: utilizing irrevocable trusts, maximizing annual gifting exclusions, and considering the tax implications of non-liquid assets.

A growing question in the industry is whether fully funded retirees—those whose assets far exceed their lifetime spending needs—should adopt a more aggressive investment stance. If a portfolio is destined for heirs who are decades away from retirement, the investment timeline is no longer the retiree's, but the beneficiaries'. In these cases, staying heavily invested in equities, similar to a 30-year-old, may be more appropriate than traditional conservative retirement allocations.

However, new risks are emerging in the retirement space, particularly as private equity (PE) begins to find its way into 401(k) plans. While PE offers the potential for higher returns and diversification, it also introduces liquidity constraints and higher fees. Wealthy families must weigh these alternative investments against traditional strategies to maintain their legacy goals without compromising current lifestyle security.
