Microsoft Sets Market Record as AI Tech Rebound Rescues Wall Street

Microsoft added a record $450 billion in market value as a tech rebound lifted the Nasdaq 100 by 3.4%, signaling renewed faith in the AI trade.

Wall Street witnessed a historic session as a massive rebound in semiconductor and software giants revitalized confidence in the artificial intelligence trade. Microsoft Corp. led the charge, surging 16% in a single day—adding approximately $450 billion to its market capitalization. This represents the largest single-day market-cap gain for any U.S. company in history. The rally was fueled by robust growth in Microsoft's cloud division, signaling to investors that the heavy capital expenditure in AI infrastructure is beginning to yield significant financial returns.

The tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 outperformed other major indices, advancing 3.4% as dip buyers rushed back into the market. This surge followed a period of intense volatility where many high-flying tech stocks had retreated from record highs. Amazon.com Inc. also contributed to the positive momentum, jumping in late-hours trading following the release of strong quarterly results. Conversely, Apple Inc. saw a slight retreat as investors rotated positions within the mega-cap tech space.

The optimism extended beyond U.S. borders, particularly into Asian markets. South Korea’s Kospi Index, often viewed as a global bellwether for technology and AI hardware, soared over 14%. This rebound was spearheaded by semiconductor majors SK Hynix Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co., which recovered sharply after a three-day selloff. The broader market sentiment appears to have shifted from fears of a 'tired tech trade' back to a conviction that the AI-driven bull market has substantial runway remaining.

Despite the daily gains, some market participants remain cautious about the sustainability of the move. Analysts noted that while the jump in Microsoft was unprecedented, the broader S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average are still navigating a 'summer storm' of risks, including fluctuating oil prices and uncertainty regarding the Federal Reserve's long-term interest rate trajectory. The VIX, often referred to as Wall Street's fear gauge, plummeted over 17% as volatility receded during the tech-led rally.
