Middle East Conflict Ignites as Iran Launches Surprise Missile Strike on U.S. Bases

The Middle East reached a perilous inflection point as Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched a surprise barrage of ballistic missiles at U.S. bases in Jordan and across the region. The escalation follows a brief five-day lull in direct hostilities. While U.S. Central Command confirmed that all missiles were successfully intercepted with no reported casualties, the incident has sent shockwaves through global energy markets.

The military flare-up coincided with high-stakes diplomacy in Washington, where Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with President Donald Trump at the White House. Netanyahu described the talks as excellent, focusing on regional security and the ongoing conflict. Outside the White House, however, thousands gathered to protest the meeting, highlighting the deep domestic and international divisions over the handling of the war.

Complicating the security landscape, Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen claimed a missile strike on a Saudi Arabian oil tanker and the downing of a Saudi reconnaissance drone. In response, joint U.S. and Saudi forces carried out retaliatory strikes against Iran-aligned Kata'ib Hezbollah and PMF groups in Iraq. Saudi Arabia has demanded that Baghdad prevent its territory from being used as a staging ground for these proxy attacks.

Despite the renewed violence, diplomatic channels remain tentatively open. Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi warned that Tehran would take any action necessary to maintain control over the Strait of Hormuz, yet Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi signaled a desire to avoid further escalation with Ukraine following a recent naval incident in the Caspian Sea. The U.S. continues to enforce a naval blockade, having recently redirected 18 commercial vessels destined for Iranian ports.
