The NBA is negotiating a $1 billion expansion franchise in London with a consortium led by Palo Alto Networks CEO Nikesh Arora.
The NBA is reportedly in advanced talks with Palo Alto Networks CEO Nikesh Arora regarding a potential $1 billion franchise bid for a new expansion team in London. Arora leads a 'Tech Titans' consortium of investors who have already made significant inroads into the UK sports market through English cricket’s Hundred competition. This move is part of the NBA’s broader European expansion strategy, which targets a 2027 launch for a 16-team NBA Europe league.
The proposed London team is considered the 'crown jewel' of the European expansion, drawing interest from over 120 prospective investors. Other high-profile bidders include the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund (PIF) and Qatar Sports Investments. The league’s model involves a mix of 12 licensed clubs and four teams that must earn their way into the competition through performance, mirroring successful European soccer structures.
NBA deputy commissioner Mark Tatum noted that the scale of the bids reflects a deep belief in the untapped potential of European basketball. If the London deal is finalized, it would represent the most significant investment in UK basketball history and provide the NBA with a permanent foothold in one of the world's most lucrative commercial hubs. The league is currently shortlisting partners to ensure the long-term sustainability of the cross-continental venture.
