Oil Surges Past $100 as Geopolitical Chaos Ignites Global Supply Fears

Brent oil has surpassed $100 per barrel as Middle East conflicts and strikes on Russian infrastructure trigger supply fears and stagflation risks.

Global energy markets are grappling with a multipronged supply crisis that has pushed Brent crude futures back above the $100-a-barrel threshold. The surge is being driven by a combination of widening conflict in the Middle East and targeted Ukrainian strikes on Russian energy infrastructure, which have intensified fears of a prolonged global shortage. Rapidan Energy Group suggest that prices could remain near these levels through year-end as the geopolitical risk premium remains firmly embedded in the market.

The volatility is manifesting across four major global fronts, creating a 'perfect storm' for energy traders. In addition to the physical disruptions, the rebound in oil prices is reigniting concerns over 'stagflation'—a period of stagnant economic growth coupled with high inflation—which is beginning to rattle broader financial markets. Analysts note that the persistent upward pressure on energy costs is complicating the task for central banks already struggling to bring inflation down to target levels.

For consumers, the impact is becoming increasingly visible at the pump and in utility bills. The S&P GSCI Index Spot, a broad measure of commodity performance, has shown significant sensitivity to these energy moves. As long as disruptions in the Middle East continue and the war in Ukraine impacts refining capacity, the energy market is expected to face a high degree of 'oil chaos' that prevents a meaningful return to price stability.
