Oil Tumbles 7% as Iran Peace Hopes Ease Global Supply Fears

Crude oil prices fell 7% as optimism over U.S.-Iran peace talks reduced supply risk premiums, leading to a broader drop in energy costs.

Oil prices plummeted 7% to a three-week low on Monday as reports of potential diplomatic breakthroughs between the U.S. and Iran eased concerns over Middle East supply disruptions. Brent and WTI futures erased recent wartime gains following signals that a nuclear deal or localized peace agreement could be within reach. The de-escalation of tensions led to a sharp retreat from the risk premiums that had supported prices in recent weeks.

The slump in energy prices had immediate ripple effects across other asset classes. U.S. Treasury yields fell between 4 and 7 basis points in response to the oil slide, as lower energy costs are expected to dampen headline inflation. Gold also experienced fluctuations, gaining ground initially as the easing of Iran tensions reduced the perceived need for aggressive interest rate hikes, though it ultimately hovered just above the $4,000 per ounce mark.

In the natural gas market, futures saw a slight uptick as September took over as the front month, supported by recent storage data. However, the broader commodities complex remained under pressure from the shift in geopolitical sentiment. Analysts note that while the potential Iran deal is a major bearish catalyst for oil, the market remains sensitive to any shifts in the diplomatic narrative.
