OpenAI Unveils Custom 'Jalapeno' Chip in Partnership with Broadcom

OpenAI and Broadcom have revealed a new custom chip called Jalapeno, marking a significant shift toward hardware independence for the AI laboratory.
OpenAI has taken a major step toward vertical integration by unveiling "Jalapeno," its first custom-designed AI chip developed in partnership with Broadcom. The move is seen as a strategic effort to reduce reliance on Nvidia and build a "full stack" architecture tailored specifically for OpenAI's frontier models. Broadcom, which has increasingly focused on helping "hyperscalers" design bespoke silicon, continues to emerge as a primary winner in the shift toward custom AI infrastructure.
The collaboration marks a pivotal moment in the "chip wars," as software leaders seek to control the hardware their algorithms run on to optimize performance and lower costs. By designing its own silicon, OpenAI joins the likes of Google and Amazon in the pursuit of specialized hardware. This trend poses a long-term challenge to general-purpose GPU providers, as major AI labs look for more efficient alternatives to handle the massive compute requirements of training and inference.
Beyond the OpenAI deal, the hardware landscape is being shaped by intensifying geopolitical tensions. The U.S. government has reportedly raised concerns with Dutch firm ASML regarding the possibility of China gaining access to top-tier chip-making tools. EUV (extreme ultraviolet) lithography systems are critical for manufacturing the advanced processors used by Nvidia and Apple. As Washington tightens export controls, the race for domestic chip self-sufficiency in both the West and China is accelerating, driving a permanent shift in global technology supply chains.
