OpenAI Unveils Custom 'Jalapeno' Chip in Partnership with Broadcom

OpenAI has taken a major step toward vertical integration by unveiling "Jalapeno," its first custom-designed AI chip developed in partnership with Broadcom. The move is seen as a strategic effort to reduce reliance on Nvidia and build a "full stack" architecture tailored specifically for OpenAI's frontier models. Broadcom, which has increasingly focused on helping "hyperscalers" design bespoke silicon, continues to emerge as a primary winner in the shift toward custom AI infrastructure.

EUV (extreme ultraviolet) lithography systems are critical for manufacturing the advanced processors used by Nvidia and Apple. As Washington tightens export controls, the race for domestic chip self-sufficiency in both the West and China is accelerating, driving a permanent shift in global technology supply chains.
