Semiconductor Stocks Rally as Samsung Warns of Chip Crunch Through 2028

Chip stocks rebounded sharply on Thursday following strong results from Lam Research, recovered from a $1 trillion rout sparked by memory supply fears.

The semiconductor industry experienced a dramatic 'relief rally' on Thursday as strong earnings from Microsoft and Lam Research countered earlier fears of a sector-wide slowdown. Lam Research shares surged 18%, marking its best performance since 1999, after reporting robust demand for its wafer-fabrication equipment. The iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) rose 8%, with major players like Applied Materials and AMD posting double-digit gains.

The rebound follows a period of extreme volatility where chip stocks shed more than $1 trillion in market value. The selloff was triggered by disappointing guidance from SK Hynix, which saw its shares tank despite posting record quarterly profits. Although SK Hynix reported that revenue jumped 257% year-on-year, the results failed to satisfy the 'AI-charged' expectations of the market, leading to a temporary rout that saw Nvidia lose $238 billion in a single session.

Samsung Electronics provided a more optimistic long-term outlook, reporting a 19-fold jump in operating profit and warning that the current memory chip crunch could persist until 2028. This scarcity is driving record earnings for DRAM and NAND sales. Samsung's management noted that AI server demand is the primary catalyst for the sales spike, leading the company to expand its manufacturing facilities in Pyeongtaek to meet future requirements.

Despite the Thursday recovery, the sector remains under pressure from geopolitical tensions and supply chain constraints. Analysts remain divided on whether the 'memory crunch' is a sign of a sustainable multi-year boom or a temporary bottleneck that could lead to oversupply once new manufacturing capacity comes online. For now, the appetite for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) continues to outpace production, keeping prices at record levels.
