Snowflake Rocks 36% on $6 Billion Amazon Cloud Deal to Power AI Evolution

Snowflake Rocks 36% on $6 Billion Amazon Cloud Deal to Power AI Evolution

Snowflake shares jumped 36% as the company announced a $6B Amazon cloud partnership to bolster its AI compute capabilities and data tools.

Snowflake shares surged 36% following a quarterly earnings beat that was accompanied by a massive $6 billion commitment to Amazon’s cloud infrastructure. The data warehousing giant announced plans to significantly expand its use of Amazon's Graviton chips and cloud-based GPUs to power its new AI features. This move highlights the growing synergy between software platforms and cloud providers in the race to offer integrated AI solutions.

The $6 billion spend over the next several years marks one of Snowflake’s largest operational commitments to date. By leveraging Amazon’s specialized silicon, Snowflake aims to reduce the cost of running complex AI queries for its enterprise customers. The announcement was welcomed by Wall Street as a sign that Snowflake is successfully transitioning from a storage-led business to an AI-compute-led business.

As part of its strategy to avoid disruption, Snowflake is also focusing on 'agentic' AI—tools that can perform tasks on behalf of users rather than just generating text. This aligns with broader industry trends seen at companies like Salesforce, which recently reported a profit of $2.11 billion. Salesforce is similarly pushing its 'Agentforce' AI products to ensure its software remains the central hub for enterprise data in an AI-first world.

The aggressive spending by software firms like Snowflake and Salesforce is a response to the 'insatiable' demand for computing power. Even as costs for AI tokens rise, these companies are betting that the long-term value of being the primary AI interface for businesses will outweigh the current high input costs. However, the high price of these tools is already causing some customers to look for cheaper alternatives or ration their AI usage.
