S&P 500 Targets 8,000 as May Rally Defies Seasonal 'Sell' Signal

S&P 500 Targets 8,000 as May Rally Defies Seasonal 'Sell' Signal

US stocks are set to end May at record highs, driven by strong earnings and AI optimism, despite warnings of a potential summer slowdown.

The U.S. stock market is concluding an exceptionally strong month of May, defying the traditional 'sell in May and go away' adage. Major indices, including the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq, have pushed toward record levels as the rally enters its ninth consecutive week of gains. Despite ongoing concerns regarding inflation and the trajectory of interest rates, investors have remained focused on a string of robust corporate earnings and the persistent momentum of artificial intelligence spending.

Market strategists, including veteran Ed Yardeni, argue that this rally is fundamentally different from a speculative bubble. Instead, they point to 'fabulous' earnings momentum as the primary driver of the current altitude. Goldman Sachs strategists have corroborated this optimistic outlook, recently lifting their S&P 500 year-end target to 8,000, suggesting a potential 17% return for the index this year. This bullishness is shared by peers at Morgan Stanley and Deutsche Bank, who also see further room for growth based on corporate profitability.

While market breadth has previously been a point of concern—with a handful of mega-cap tech stocks doing much of the heavy lifting—recent data suggests a broadening of the rally. The Invesco S&P 500 Equal Weight ETF indicates that smaller components are beginning to keep pace with their larger peers. However, some analysts warn of a 'limbo period' as the current earnings season winds down. Without the immediate catalyst of quarterly reports, the market may become more sensitive to macroeconomic data and geopolitical shifts.

Looking ahead, the sustainability of this run-up faces a seasonal hurdle. Some Bloomberg analysts suggest that a 'stagflationary' backdrop could make for a challenging summer. The technical 'pain trade' remains to the upside for now, but the lack of immediate catalysts could lead to increased volatility as investors transition from an earnings-focused environment to one dominated by central bank policy and labor market updates.
