S&P 500 Wobbles as Chipmaker Rout Offsets $80 Oil Relief

U.S. equities are struggling for direction as a sharp selloff in the semiconductor sector counters the positive sentiment from tumbling crude oil prices.

The S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite wavered in Tuesday trading as a deepening rout in semiconductor stocks offset optimism from falling energy prices. Tensions are mounting for the tech sector as investors demand evidence that massive capital expenditures in artificial intelligence are translating into bottom-line growth. ASML Holding NV led the decline following reports that a Chinese state-backed firm has begun mass-producing lithography tools, posing a potential threat to the Dutch giant's market dominance.

In the credit markets, the cost of protecting Nvidia Corp. debt against default has surged, reflecting heightening anxiety over the scale of recent AI-related financing deals—estimated to exceed $750 billion. Meanwhile, South Korea's SK Hynix Inc. saw its shares dip below its U.S. initial public offering price, further weighing on the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index.

The market's broader performance was buoyed by a significant retreat in oil prices. Brent and WTI crude futures fell sharply as geopolitical tensions in the Middle East showed signs of a potential pause, relieving some inflationary pressure. While the Dow Jones Industrial Average managed to gain approximately 0.5%, the heavy concentration of chipmakers in the Nasdaq kept the tech-heavy index in negative territory throughout the morning session.

Strategists at Plurimi noted that while the economy could 'manage' oil at $90, the recent volatility in momentum stocks suggests a structural shift in investor sentiment. The 'AI on/AI off' trade has become the primary driver for global equities, creating crisis-level swings that have become the new normal for 2026. As the week progresses, all eyes remain on mega-cap earnings to justify the current valuations of the 'Magnificent Seven.'
