Spain Slams EU Response as Migrants Return from Ceuta Enclave

Spain's North African territory of Ceuta is seeing a slow return to normalcy after a mass migration event that saw tens of thousands of people cross the border from Morocco. According to Spanish officials, most of the migrants who swam or scaled fences to enter the enclave have now returned. However, the crisis resulted in at least 67 confirmed deaths, with dozens more missing at sea.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez's government has faced criticism from both domestic and international actors. Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni described the scenes in Ceuta as 'shocking' and temporarily suspended the Schengen arrangement with Spain in response to the influx. Spanish officials have countered by calling the response of some EU neighbors 'selfish' and demanding better coordination.

The European Union has scheduled an emergency meeting for next week to address the crisis and coordinate a bloc-wide response to migration through North Africa. The event has highlighted the fragile nature of border agreements between Spain and Morocco, as well as the deep divisions within the EU regarding how to handle sudden surges in migrant arrivals.
