Tech Giants Cut 140,000 Jobs to Fund AI as 'One-Person Companies' Rise

Major tech firms have cut 140,000 jobs to pivot toward AI spending, while automated tools are enabling a rise in million-dollar one-person firms.

Despite pouring tens of billions of dollars into artificial intelligence, the world’s largest technology groups are continuing to streamline their traditional workforces. New data shows that Amazon, Oracle, Meta, and Microsoft have collectively cut nearly 50,000 jobs over the past year, representing roughly 6% of their total corporate workforce. In total, U.S. tech groups have shed 140,000 positions as they pivot resources toward capital-intensive AI projects.

The trend represents a significant shift in corporate strategy, where "efficiency" is being used to fund the massive hardware and energy costs required for generative AI. While the tech industry was once defined by its high headcounts and employee perks, the current era is characterized by a "do more with less" philosophy. Executives are increasingly betting that AI tools will eventually fill the gaps left by human workers, though the short-term reality is one of painful restructuring for tens of thousands of employees.

Concurrently, a new breed of enterprise is emerging: the "million-dollar solo company." Powered by AI agents and automated software development tools, more founders are managing to scale businesses to $1 million—and in some cases $10 million—in annual revenue without hiring a single employee. These solo-preneurs are utilizing AI for everything from customer support to coding, potentially signaling a future where the traditional relationship between company revenue and headcount is permanently severed.
