Tech Tumbles as Chip Selloff Drags Nasdaq Down 2%

A global selloff in chipmakers and mega-cap tech stocks has sent the Nasdaq down 2%, as investors pivot toward defensive sectors amid valuation concerns.

The Nasdaq Composite tumbled 2.2% on Tuesday as a deepening selloff in semiconductor stocks and high-profile technology names erased gains from earlier in the month. The S&P 500 fell 1.4%, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq bore the brunt of the volatility, fueled by a 3.5% drop in Micron and significant weakness across the Philadelphia SE Semiconductor Index. Investors appeared to pivot toward defensive sectors, with consumer staples showing relative strength as Wall Street grapples with expensive valuations and shifting interest rate expectations.

The downturn has been exacerbated by rising borrowing costs, which tend to disproportionately hurt high-growth tech companies by decreasing the present value of future cash flows. Notably, SpaceX and Alphabet saw significant retreats, signaling that the 'June Tech Wreck' may represent a broader reassessment of the artificial intelligence trade. Market participants are now focused on Micron's upcoming earnings report, viewed as a critical barometer for the health of the hardware sector and continued AI infrastructure spending.

Adding to the volatility was a massive options expiry estimated at $7.5 trillion, which contributed to record-breaking trading volumes. While some pockets of the market remain resilient, the VIX volatility index surged nearly 13%, reflecting growing investor anxiety over a potential correction in a market many analysts describe as 'toppy.' The rotation out of chips into staples suggests a tactical shift toward safety as the second half of the year approaches.
