The Tax Maze: Advanced Strategies for High-Income Wealth Preservation

Wealthy investors are using geographic moves and strategic Roth conversions to navigate a complex tax landscape and preserve their long-term wealth.

High-earning individuals face a complex maze of tax obligations, including the Net Investment Income Tax (NIIT) and higher long-term capital gains rates. To combat this, some are turning to the 'Florida Flip,' an strategy that involves establishing residency in a no-tax state to execute large Roth conversions. Such a move can potentially save a couple upwards of $250,000 over a decade by avoiding state-level taxes on the converted amounts.

Beyond residency shifts, wealthy savers are utilizing five 'out-of-the-box' moves to optimize their nest eggs. These include maximizing the Qualified Business Income (QBI) deduction, utilizing health savings accounts as secondary retirement vehicles, and strategic tax-loss harvesting to offset capital gains. As tax laws evolve, maintaining a 'tax-smart' approach is becoming as critical to wealth preservation as the underlying investment performance itself.
