Trump Administration Seeks NDAs and More Political Control Over Federal Grants

The Trump administration is moving to tighten its grip on the federal workforce and the distribution of federal funds through a series of new proposed rules. In a significant shift, the White House has proposed requiring all current and future federal employees to sign non-disclosure agreements (NDAs). The administration characterizes this move as a necessary crackdown on unauthorized leaks to the media, though whistleblowers and transparency advocates worry it could stifle oversight.

Furthering this centralization of power, a separate proposal would grant political appointees more direct control over the awarding of federal grants. Typically handled by career civil servants to ensure non-partisan allocation, the new rules would require senior political officials to sign off on specific grant categories. These executive actions come as Senate Republicans face internal divisions. Nearly half of the 53-member majority reportedly balked during a heated meeting regarding the 'anti-weaponization' fund proposed by the administration and Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche. While some lawmakers support the assertive stance against the 'administrative state,' others fear the political fallout and the erosion of traditional institutional barriers between political leadership and civil service functions.
