Trump Halts Massive Iran Strikes; Announces 'Last Chance' Negotiations

President Trump has paused strikes on Iran, citing imminent negotiations over the Strait of Hormuz, while Tehran warns of 'flames of war' if energy infrastructure is targeted.

In a dramatic turn of events in the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran, President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that he has halted planned 'massive strikes' on Iranian infrastructure, claiming a diplomatic breakthrough is imminent. Speaking to reporters upon his return to Washington D.C., Trump stated that new negotiations are set to begin on Monday, characterizing the moment as Iran’s 'last chance' to sign a definitive agreement.

The primary focus of the upcoming talks is the management of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime artery through which one-fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas flows. The waterway has been effectively closed since early March, barring a brief period in June, leading to a global energy crunch. While Trump expressed optimism about a deal, Tehran has publicly downplayed the prospect of direct talks with the U.S., instead emphasizing ongoing discussions with Oman regarding maritime security.

The shift toward diplomacy comes amid severe regional volatility. On Saturday, Iran’s military command warned of a 'full-scale regional war' if the U.S. targets its energy sites, such as power plants or petrochemical facilities. Concurrently, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) remains on high alert, while the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) continues to enforce a naval blockade, having redirected dozens of commercial vessels since mid-July.

The human and economic toll of the conflict is mounting. Inside Iran, the population faces a contracting economy and severe energy imbalances following months of U.S.-Israeli strikes on military and civilian targets. Regionally, the conflict has expanded into secondary fronts, with Kuwait reporting the destruction of Iranian drones in its airspace and Saudi Arabia seeking an international coalition to counter Houthi maritime blockades in the Red Sea. Domestic pressure is also rising for President Trump, whose approval ratings have dipped as high petrol prices strain American households despite soaring profits for oil giants like Exxon and Chevron.
