TSMC Sales Surge 30% as Taiwan Weighs Strict AI Export Limits to China

TSMC reported a 30% revenue jump driven by AI chip demand, even as Taiwan considers tighter export controls to China to align with U.S. trade restrictions.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) reported a 30% surge in monthly sales for May, providing the latest evidence that global demand for advanced AI processors remains robust. As the primary manufacturer for Nvidia and other chip designers, TSMC’s performance is often viewed as a leading indicator for the broader technology hardware sector.

The sales jump coincides with heightening geopolitical tensions surrounding semiconductor technology. Taiwan authorities are reportedly considering stricter export controls on AI chip sales to China, a move intended to align more closely with U.S. national security measures. This potential policy shift aims to limit China’s access to high-end computing power while securing Taiwan’s position as a critical ally in the Western tech ecosystem.

This "chip war" has broader market implications. While TSMC and other major manufacturers are benefiting from the "rush to build," the threat of trade restrictions continues to loom over long-term growth forecasts for the Greater China region. For now, however, the sheer volume of orders for AI-related hardware is offsetting concerns about regional instability.
