Turkiye and Indonesia Strengthen Strategic Partnership in Defense and Trade

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan traveled to Jakarta this week for high-level bilateral talks intended to cement a growing strategic partnership between Turkiye and Indonesia. The two nations, which represent two of the largest economies in the Islamic world, are seeking to expand cooperation in defense, technology, and trade.

A primary focus of the talks revolves around defense industry collaboration. Indonesia has shown significant interest in Turkish-made drones and naval technology as it seeks to modernize its military. For Turkiye, Indonesia represents a massive, growing market and a gateway to the broader Southeast Asian region. Both nations are also exploring ways to increase bilateral trade volumes, which have seen steady growth over the last three years.

Beyond economic and military ties, the meeting addressed shared geopolitical concerns, including maritime security and the humanitarian situation in the Middle East. As middle powers with significant regional influence, Turkiye and Indonesia are increasingly coordinating their diplomatic efforts on the global stage. The visit is expected to result in a series of Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) spanning education, cultural exchange, and digital economy initiatives.
