UN Chief Visits Syria as Damascus Signals Potential Security Deal with Israel

UN Secretary-General António Guterres made his first official visit to Syria on Saturday, appealing for international support for a population devastated by years of conflict and recent military strikes. During his visit to Damascus, Guterres emphasized the urgent need for reconstruction and humanitarian aid, noting that the Syrian people have been caught in the crossfire of regional power struggles.

The visit coincides with a surprising diplomatic shift by Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa. In a recent interview, Al-Sharaa stated that Syria is actively seeking a security deal with Israel. This potential rapprochement represents a significant departure from decades of hostility and could fundamentally alter the security landscape of the Levant if a memorandum of understanding is reached.

However, the situation on the ground remains volatile. While the government explores diplomatic avenues, Syrian civilians continue to face the consequences of the U.S.-Iran war.
