A boxer from the small island nation of Tuvalu secured her country's first Commonwealth Games medal through an unexpected turn of events.
Tarona Taafaki of Tuvalu made history at the Commonwealth Games, earning her nation's inaugural medal in a truly unique fashion. Competing in the women's 70kg-75kg light-middleweight boxing category, Taafaki found herself on the podium without needing to win a single match.
The draw for her weight class was remarkably sparse, featuring only seven boxers. This meant that by merely participating and making the weight, she was guaranteed at least a bronze medal. With one fighter withdrawing from the competition, the path to a medal became even clearer.
