U.S. and Saudi Arabia Strike Iraqi Militias as Iran War Spreads to Caspian Sea

Tensions in the Middle East have entered a volatile new phase as the United States and Saudi Arabia launched coordinated air strikes against Iran-backed militias in Iraq. However, the conflict's geographical footprint continues to expand. In the Red Sea, Houthi rebels have declared a blockade against Saudi Arabia, targeting vessels near the Bab al-Mandeb strait. Simultaneously, the war has reached the Caspian Sea, where Ukraine confirmed striking a vessel it alleged was carrying Iranian military cargo. Tehran has condemned the Caspian attack, claiming the ship was a commercial vessel transporting iron from Russia.

The economic toll on Iran has been severe. The government reports that nearly 35% of its pre-war natural gas output has been lost to bombing, leading to critical power shortages. Additionally, non-oil trade with China has plummeted by 75% since the conflict began. As the U.S. military reviews its missile stockpiles following months of heavy engagement, the international community remains on edge, fearing that the intertwining of the Middle East and Ukraine war fronts could trigger a broader global conflagration.
