U.S.-Canada Trade Tensions Mount as New Tariffs Target Dairy Sector

Canada weighs retaliatory measures as Trump tariffs hit the dairy sector, souring relations despite the opening of a new border bridge.

Trade relations between the U.S. and Canada have soured as new tariffs introduced by the Trump administration go into effect. Prime Minister Mark Carney warned that "everything is on the table," including potential retaliation, as Ottawa prepares its response to levies that have specifically targeted Canada’s "powerful" dairy sector.

The tension was visibly displayed during the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge, a project linking Michigan and Ontario. Despite the bridge’s original purpose as a symbol of unity, Canada disinvited U.S. dignitaries from the ceremony in a move that highlighted the deepening rift. Canadian officials expressed frustration that the project’s completion coincides with a trade row that has "thrown the world economy into chaos."

Security concerns have also added to the diplomatic strain. Belgium authorities recently detained a Canadian intern suspected of spying at NATO’s Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE), while in Toronto, shots were fired at the U.S. consulate for the second time this year. Additionally, both nations are coordinating responses to massive wildfires in Oregon and British Columbia that have already consumed millions of acres.
