US-Canada Trade War Escalates as Trump Targets Dairy Sector

Canada warns of retaliation against US tariffs targeting its dairy sector as trade tensions overshadow the opening of a new international bridge.

Relations between the US and Canada have reached a new low as President Trump’s trade policies target key Canadian sectors. The 'powerful' Canadian dairy industry has been singled out as a primary justification for new tariffs scheduled to take effect in August. Prime Minister Mark Carney warned that 'everything is on the table,' including retaliatory measures, as trade talks in Washington intensify.

The diplomatic rift was visibly apparent at the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge. Originally intended as a symbol of North American unity, the ceremony became a flashpoint when Canada disinvited US dignitaries from the event. Beyond trade, security concerns have also emerged; Belgian authorities recently detained a Canadian intern suspected of spying at NATO’s Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE), though details regarding the nature of the alleged espionage remain scarce.
