U.S.-Korea Market Ties Tighten as 'Stealth' AI Winners Emerge in Japan

U.S.-Korea Market Ties Tighten as 'Stealth' AI Winners Emerge in Japan

U.S. and South Korean markets are increasingly linked by the AI supply chain. While Japanese material suppliers see record growth, tech giants are cutting jobs to fund AI infrastructure.

The global semiconductor trade is creating an unprecedented level of synchronization between U.S. and Asian markets. The 60-day correlation between the Nasdaq 100 and the South Korean Kospi has climbed to 0.50, its highest level since 2021. This tightening link is primarily driven by Samsung and SK Hynix, whose dominance in memory chips makes South Korea an early barometer for the health of U.S. tech giants.

Beyond the major chipmakers, a new class of 'stealth' AI winners is emerging in Japan. Companies like Toto, Nittobo, and Ajinomoto have seen their shares rally by more than 60% this year. These firms do not make semiconductors but provide the essential materials—such as advanced ceramics for chip equipment, special glass fiber for AI servers, and Ajinomoto Build-up Film (ABF) for high-end processors—that the industry cannot function without.

The capital flows are also moving toward consolidation in the private sector. Blackstone recently reported a surge in profits, largely attributed to its aggressive investments in AI-related infrastructure and data centers. Meanwhile, in China, the market debut of Changxin Technology Group (CXMT) saw shares soar 466% on Shanghai’s STAR Market, highlighting the massive domestic appetite for semiconductor independence.

However, the rapid expansion is not without social costs. Despite the massive capital being poured into hardware, major U.S. tech groups including Amazon, Oracle, Meta, and Microsoft have cut an estimated 140,000 jobs recently. This represents about 6% of their corporate workforce, as companies 'right-size' their traditional operations to redirect funds toward the development and implementation of artificial intelligence.
