Wealthy Investors Pivot to Alternative Assets as 60/40 Portfolio Reliability Fades

High-net-worth investors are abandoning traditional 60/40 portfolios in favor of alternative assets and tax-deferral strategies like 1031 exchanges.

The traditional 60/40 portfolio—comprised of 60% stocks and 40% bonds—is coming under fire for being too risky for wealthy investors in the current economic climate. Historically, bonds served as a hedge against equity declines, but recent market cycles have seen both asset classes fall in tandem. Accredited investors are increasingly looking toward 'out-of-the-box' moves and alternative assets like real estate, gold, and silver to provide genuine diversification.

Wealthy savers are also utilizing specific tax-advantaged vehicles to preserve their capital. Strategies such as 1031 exchanges in real estate allow investors to defer capital gains taxes indefinitely until assets are passed to heirs. Additionally, financial planners are investigating the value of the '1% fee' model, with research indicating that only a fraction of those fees actually goes toward investment management, with the rest subsidizing broader financial planning services.
