World Health Organization Declares DR Congo Ebola Outbreak Worst on Record

International health officials are sounding the alarm as the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) faces its most severe Ebola outbreak to date. According to the World Health Organization, the current strain has claimed 1,587 lives, with the crisis exacerbated by a lack of approved vaccines and a surge in misinformation. Violent attacks on health workers have been reported, driven by rumors and false claims circulating in local communities.

In contrast, neighboring Uganda has seen relative success in containing the spread. After discharging its last patient two weeks ago, Uganda is being cited as a model for regional response, though officials warn that the porous border with the DRC keeps the risk of re-entry high. The WHO is calling for an immediate infusion of international aid to bolster frontline medical efforts and counter the digital misinformation hindering the response.
