World-Renowned Climber Nirmal Purja Missing After Pakistan Avalanche

Nirmal Purja, the record-breaking mountaineer, is among a group of 10 climbers feared missing after a massive avalanche in Pakistan. The group—which includes an American, a Chinese national, an Omani, and five Nepalis—was climbing in a remote region of the Karakoram range when the slide occurred.

The Alpine Club of Pakistan is currently coordinating with local authorities to launch a helicopter rescue mission, though efforts have been hampered by poor weather conditions and high altitudes. Purja, known for his unprecedented feat of climbing all 14 of the world’s 8,000-meter peaks in record time, is a highly experienced climber, but officials admit the situation is dire.

Mountaineering experts have noted that unseasonably warm temperatures in the Himalayas and Karakoram have led to increased glacial instability and more frequent avalanches. This incident follows a record-breaking season on Mount Everest where 274 climbers scaled the peak in a single day, leading to renewed calls for stricter regulation of high-altitude climbing to ensure safety in an increasingly volatile environment.
