The tension stems from Caballero’s pre-pitch routine, which involves looking down until the final possible second to disrupt the pitcher’s rhythm. On Monday, Pirates reliever Dennis Santana confronted Caballero over the tactic, leading to both teams storming the field. MLB officials reportedly instructed umpires to strictly enforce the rule against "conduct designed to deceive a pitcher." Yankees manager Aaron Boone was ejected during the heated argument that followed, calling the mid-season change in enforcement "embarrassing" and "bulls—."

Caballero expressed frustration after the game, claiming other players use similar stalling tactics without penalty.
